BJJ Monterey, CA
Submission Only is a unique Round Robin tournament with no elimination where the only way to win a match is by submission. Every competitor will have a match with every other competitor in their division regardless of wins or losses. Each competitor will have up to 6 matches against opponents of varying skill levels.
Submission Only is a submission grappling tournament. All competitors are invited to participate, regardless of their grappling background. Competitors may wear grappling shirts and grappling shorts, or they may wear a Gi if they so choose. Gi jackets and Gi pants are the only clothing that may be gripped by either competitor.
Weigh-in for all competitors takes place immediately before the tournament. Weight categories for men and women will be drawn up in order to allow for each division to include no more than 6 competitors.
The cost to enter is $35.00 and spectators get in free. Competitors may register online or before 10 am on the day of the event. There will be no refunds.
Rules
Matches will start from standing. Competitors who move onto or outside the border when standing will be restarted in the center of the mat by the referee. If the competitors move outside the area while on the ground, the action is frozen and they are moved back to the center of the mat in their current position. Deliberately or repeatedly moving outside the area will be considered as stalling and will be treated as a foul.
Ways to win
* Submission (physical and/or verbal tap)
* Referee Stoppage (medical issue, to prevent injury, or rule infringement)
Time limit
Each match will last 4 minutes.
Scoring system
No points are awarded during the matches. Competition will be in a round-robin format within each weight category. 3 points are awarded for a submission win, 1 point each for a draw (i.e. no submission at the end of 4 minutes) and 0 points for a submission loss. At the end of the round robin the competitor with the most points in each category is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the two competitors will have a final match to determine the winner. Medals are awarded to the winner and runner-up for each weight category.
Illegal Techniques
* No kicking or punching, no small joint manipulation (i.e. fingers & toes), no gouging (including any pressure on eye socket), no fishhooking, no grabbing the throat
* No heel hooks (straight footlocks, straight kneebars, calf locks, figure-four toe-holds allowed)
* No neck cranks, no twisting or compression of the neck and/or spine (no can openers, no twisters)
* No scissor takedowns, no suplex throws, no body slams (including slamming from guard or to escape submissions such as triangle and armbar)
* No deliberately moving outside the designated mat area; no stalling or refusing to engage with an opponent
Disqualification
Committing 2 fouls in a match results in an automatic loss. However, the referee has discretion to disqualify a competitor immediately after a serious, dangerous or deliberate foul. The referee will disqualify competitors that purposefully take the match out of bounds to defend a submission. The referee can stop or restart a match at any time if he considers it necessary for safety reasons. The referee’s decision is final and non-negotiable.
Clothing & Hygiene
* Wrestling shoes are permitted, head gear is not; cups are permitted, as well as knee and elbow pads/braces made of soft materials, (no metal or hard plastic)
* All clothing worn by competitors must be freshly washed and dried * Toe and fingernails must be cut short and clean
